メタボリズムの規定

「「メタボリズム」とは、来るべき社会の姿を、具体的に提案するグループの名称である。
われわれは、人間社会を、原子から大星雲にいたる宇宙の生成発展する一過程と考えているが、とくにメタボリズム（新陳代謝）という生物学上の用語を用いるのは、デザインや技術を、人間の生命力の外延と考えるからに他ならない。したがってわれわれは、歴史の新陳代謝を、自然に受け入れるのではなく、積極的に促進させようとするものである。

今回は、建築家による都市の提案でまとめられたが、今後は、各分野のデザイナーや美術家、技術者、科学者、また政治家など、多分野からの参加が予定され、すでにその一部は準備を始めている。われわれのグループそのものも、たえまない新陳代謝を続けていくであろう」（川添登編『メタボリズム1960』、美術出版社、1960年、４ページ）

''Metabolisme'' is the name of the group, in which each member proposes future designs of our coming world through his concrete designs and illustrations. We regard human society as a vital process- a continuous development from atom to nebula. The reason why we use such a biological word, the metabolism, is that, we believe, design and technology should be a denotation of human vitality.

We are not going to accept the metabolism as a natural historical process, but we are trying to encourage active metabolic development of our society through our proposals.

This volume mainly consists of the designs for our future cities proposed only by architects. From the next issue, however, the people in other fields such as designers, artists, engineers, scientists, and politicians, will participate in it, and already some of them are preparing for the next one.
